Arenal Volcano: A Costa Rica’s Tourist Icon

No matter when or where you look for “Costa Rica vacations”, it is possible that one of the first search results will be the Arenal Volcano, this is probably the most renown tourist attraction in Costa Rica, even thought there are many other volcanoes, and certainly many other interesting destinations in Costa Rica, the Arenal Volcano is to Costa Rica what a place like Machu Pichu is to Peru.

Arenal Volcano

The Arenal Volcano has been one of the main attractions in Costa Rica for years. The lava flows, smoking craters and dramatic explosions made this one of the “must see” locations in Costa Rica for decades. Then, in October of 2010, the Arenal Volcano went quiet, but the attraction of this region goes beyond the Volcano itself.

The Arenal Volcano, with its almost perfectly shaped cone, soars 1,633 meters (5.500 ft) above sea level. This volcano presents five craters altogether, and one of those craters is about 150 m (500 ft) deep. From time to time, deep earth echoes are heard and clouds of vapor or smoke billows out of the top. The frequency of activity varies greatly from day-to-day. This area also shows the largest freshwater lake in the country. Arenal Lake is a man-made water reservoir favorite among water sports lovers and fishermen.

Hanging Bridges in the Arenal Volcano area

Although this area remains as major destination due to the presence of the Volcano, in this area is where it is likely to find activities such as horseback riding, waterfall rappelling, zip lining, kayaking, tubbing, river rafting, trekking and biking, and there are also other less active tours which are good for the entire family such as the hanging bridges, guided nature walks, daytime or twilight floating tours, night tours, farm tours, and the hot springs, among others.
